The Orlando Sentinel reported that the Florida transportation department has a plan to deal with the congestion on Interstate 4. More specifically, the transportation department wants to tackle the region that extends from the west Orange County area through west Osceola and north Polk counties.

This I-4 overhaul is estimated to cost about $2.5 billion, stretching 14 miles in total. The construction will span from State Road 536 near Disney Springs to U.S. Highway 27 in Polk County. That said, this project won’t be completed overnight —  the Orlando Sentinel estimated that it will take a decade for this vision to come to life.

This 10-year project will take some collaboration. Thanks to “accelerated state funding and an approach called a ‘phased design build’,” Florida wants to speed up the construction timeline for commuters, according to the Orlando Sentinel

The project seeks to smooth traffic, and drivers may see changes to the center median of the rebuilt interstate. This includes toll lanes, a.k.a. “express lanes,” and space for passenger rail tracks for the Brightline train company.
