I Was a Disney World Cast Member, and I’m Letting You in on a Refillable Mug Secret

When you work at Disney World, there are a lot of things that seem like common knowledge, but then you remember that they’re only common knowledge because you deal with them all day long.

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

Yep, you learn a lot of tips and tricks about the parks, hotels, transportation, and more. We have lots of former Cast Members on the team here at AE, and a couple of them spent a LOT of time at the Disney World hotels. Like, of course Cast Members use their discount to stay in the Disney World hotels for staycations! That’s one of the BEST parts of working there! Well, today we’re here to spill the tea on refillable mugs.

A Rapid Fill Mug (or Refillable Mug — the terms are used interchangeably in Disney vernacular) is an insulated plastic coffee mug with a lid. Refillable Mugs are found at the Resorts of Walt Disney World, typically in Quick Service restaurants or food courts.

If you are not on the Disney Dining Plan, you can purchase a plastic mug for $19.99 or a metal mug for $29.99 for your length of stay. Here are a few things that we learned from getting these all the time that a lot of folks don’t realize:

Refillable Mugs

First, you can refill your mug at ANY of the Disney World hotels. It doesn’t have to be the one you’re staying at! Just find the drink machine at that hotel’s food court or quick service location, and fill that bad boy up! This is super convenient, as you can refill your mug at the Monorail Resorts if you’re in Magic Kingdom, or the EPCOT Area resorts if you’re in EPCOT.

Next, don’t waste your time filling that bad boy up with ice. The cups aren’t that insulated, and the ice WILL melt. Then, you’ll just have a sad drink. That being said, we recommend getting something that will still be good if it isn’t super cold. Those soft drinks will probably go flat after about an hour or so, so either drink ’em fast or opt for something else.

Another tip we saw a lot of folks utilize is that you can grab a different-colored lid for each family member. Yep, this makes it SO much easier to remember whose is whose.

Oh, and one more thing to keep in mind is that once you fill up your mug, the machine KNOWS when you did it based on that little chip inside. So, you’ll have to wait 2 minutes before refilling it again.

And there you have it! What do you think? Are you now on Team Refillable Mug? We’ll be sure to keep you updated with more Disney news, so follow along so that you’re always in the loop!

  1. I have a history question for cast members. The original cups were shorter and wider. And I swear that the first ones we bought had signs everywhere that they were forever mugs! There have been lots of debates on lots of blogs as to whether or not this is true… sadly they often end in a fight of…yes they were forever mugs vs some saying that people bringing them back were stealing soda from Disney. So is there anyone in your cast member group who can remember back all the way to the beginning? Thanks for your help.

  2. Another tip is that there’s a self-serve drink kiosk in Hollywood Studios Backlot Express is chip free, so you can fill it there (just be sneaky!), and at Connections Cafe at Epcot!

  3. Have never seen the metal cups at the food courts only the gift stores. Can you upgrade to the metal ones if you have the dining plan?
