Out of the Disney World hotels, there are a few that are truly HARD to score a stay at.
The most exclusive of these hotels? Well, that’s Shades of Green. It isn’t exclusive because of popularity or even uber-expensive rooms. Nope, it’s exclusive because it’s reserved for the use of active and retired members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. Members of the Reserves, National Guard, as well as currently employed DOD civilians and U.S. Public Health Officers are also eligible. It’s actually OWNED by the United States Department of Defense. We asked our readers on Facebook what they thought of the experience there, and the answers didn’t at all surprise us.
Our readers are OBSESSED with this hotel! Although parts of it are a bit dated, it’s well-kept and is a great option for those who want to be in the middle of all the Disney World action but don’t want to stay in a super-duper themed room. Â Here’s what some of our readers said:
It’s the BEST space for the price.
The resort is dedicated to providing first-class, low-cost accommodations for Department of Defense Personnel, so this makes sense.
The rooms are spacious and casually-themed, and it’s located just a short walk away from the Polynesian, where you can catch the Monorail.
It’s so quiet and calm.
Due to the exclusivity, there aren’t as many folks staying there. This allows for a quiet, calm experience — away from the hustle and bustle of Disney World, but still close enough to get to everything when you’re all rested up.

All rooms have a balcony or patio!
This is a perk for SURE! Each room has a balcony or patio that allows a great view of the expansive property.
This only further proves the fact that it’s one of the most relaxing places to visit.

We stay at Shades every chance we get! It’s small by Disney resort standards, the rooms are large and comfortable and the restaurants are good.
Buses are great and run on a reliable schedule.
We have stayed at Shades of Green several times. Love the relaxing atmosphere and the large rooms. Sadly, it is no longer possible to walk to the Poly; we’ll have to re-think our plans next time.
