It’s no secret that fast food prices, like the prices of many consumer goods, have increased dramatically in recently years. This has led to some consumers being priced out, and chains desperately trying to get them back in response. They’ve tried bringing back popular menu items and social media-friendly promotions. Now, rumor has it that McDonald’s is going farther.

According a Bloomberg report cited by USA Today, McDonald’s is planning to introduce a $5 value meal option to stores nationwide.

The meal would allegedly include a choice between a McChicken sandwich, a McDouble burger, or a four-piece chicken McNuggets and include fries and a drink for $5, a VAST discount from the current prices of purchasing those items separately. According to the outlet, McDonald’s is still discussing the plan with franchise owners, who had reportedly rejected a previous version of the plan.

The $5 meal would be in-line with the affordability-focused strategy Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski has laid out for the chain this year. During a February earnings call, he said, “I think what you’re going to see as you head into 2024 is probably more attention to what I would describe as affordability… Consumers continue to be even more discriminating with every dollar that they spend as they face elevated prices in their day-to-day spending, which is putting pressure on the industry. It’s imperative that we continue to keep affordability at the forefront for our customers.”

  1. Wendy’s been selling the $5.00 biggie bag for the past year consisting of a crispy chicken sandwich or a double cheeseburger…(4) chicken nuggets…a small fry and a small drink. McDonalds offer seems pretty chintzy..
