No One’s Talking About These Important Disney World Ride RULES

Some of these Disney ride rules may be “unofficial” but all of them should be followed.

Magic Kingdom

Going to Walt Disney World is supposed to be an escape from reality — a chance to cut loose from the rigors of real life and instead live in a world of fun and fantasy. However, as enjoyable as a trip to the Most Magical Place on Earth is supposed to be, it doesn’t mean guests visiting can or should do whatever they want. Not only are there, of course, the official Disney rules that they must follow at all times, but there are also etiquette rules that should be maintained, even on rides. These are just a few of those etiquette rules.

Don’t Speak Along with the Ghost Host

Look, every major Disney fan can probably recite most, if not all, of the Haunted Mansion’s Stretching Room dialogue verbatim. However, to paraphrase one Dr. Ian Malcolm, sometimes people are so “preoccupied with whether they could they don’t stop to think if they should.”

Don’t talk during ride pre-shows

Frankly, loudly speaking along with the spiel is annoying. It’s annoying to other guests around you — especially first timers — and it’s annoying to Cast Members, plus it can be distracting and affect operations. Just don’t do it. (Also, we specified the Haunted Mansion as it’s a particular problem on that attraction, but this general etiquette “rule” goes for every ride/show on property).

Remove Your Hats and Glasses

On fast moving or thrilling attractions like Tron Lightcycle/Run, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Space Mountain, or Tower of Terror (to name a few) guests are often reminded to remove loose articles like hats and glasses. However, there are still some people who refuse. Don’t be one of those people. At best, you’ll end up losing your item (no, Disney most likely isn’t going to be able to stop the ride for you find it), and at worst your item could fly off and injure a fellow rider.

Don’t Film Rides in Dangerous or Distracting Ways

We all enjoy a good ride-through video on YouTube or examining photos of our favorite attractions looking for hidden details and easter eggs. However, please don’t go overboard trying to film or take photos. First off, there’s the danger — especially on faster moving rides — of losing  control of your device and having it hit yourself or someone else. Beyond that, filming the whole time in a way that’s blocking the view of other riders or having a light or flash turned on can ruin the experience for everyone.

Don’t Throw Coins in the Ride Flumes…with One Exception

We get that there’s a long tradition of tossing coins into fountains or other bodies of water, but how about we just skip it, huh? Why toss coins into the waters of Pirates of the Caribbean, for example? Or literally throwing money away, and risking damaging the ride or (depending where you’re throwing your change from) injuring other riders?

The one exception we’re willing to accept here is on “it’s a small world” since Disney actively collects the change accumulated in the flume and donates the money to charity.

Don’t Leave Hair Ties on Everest

The longstanding urban legend is that the first hair ties left at the peak of Expedition Everest were left there by members of various cheer groups at Disney World for competition. Whether this is really how it started or these groups were simply following a preexisting trend is up-for-debate, what’s not is just how annoying it is. The pile of hair ties on top of the ride is ugly, distracting, and breaks the illusion and immersion on what should be one of the ride’s literal dramatic high-points, and seems to continuously reappear no matter how many times Disney removes them. Just don’t do it, please.

Hair ties!
